At the Gates of Doom

At the Gates of Doom is a sci fi wargame designed to be played with anywhere from ten to hundreds of models. The rules are designed to be easy to understand, while maintaining a degree of complexity to give the game unique quirks, and lots of fun moments while playing. This is a model-agnostic game, meaning you can use whatever miniatures you want to represent the various armies of the Gates of Doom universe.

The game is set in the far future, when humanity has spread across the stars, but the glorious future that was imagined has not come to pass. Humanity’s expansion was made possible by a network of mysterious gates, that allow instant travel from one planet to another. But when the gates stopped working, during the time known as the Great Closing, millions of planets were left isolated, and their societies quickly fell apart. Some fell to barbarism, others managed to cling on to their old ways. A few managed to rebuild and recover.

But now the gates are open again, and the planets that were once separated, are now connected. All the societies that formed during the Great Closing now wage war, fighting to protect their existing territories, and gain new ones. This is the world of chaos and barbarism that exists now, where advanced technology clashes with blind faith and barbaric strength. Where the remnants of humanity fight among a billion ruins, over planets, power, and ancient knowledge. This is the world of the Gates of Doom.

The Galaxy

The first gate discovered, many millenia ago, was located on Mars, and humans spread from there. That original gate has since been lost, with many speculating that if it can be found, salvation will follow. The most developed and secure colonies were established on those planets close to Mars, with ones further out being more reliant on trade and supplies from other planets. Therefore, when the Great Closing happened, the newly colonised planets quickly collapsed, no longer able to recieve supplies. Those close to Mars meanwhile, managed to stay at a relatively advanced level of technology.

The galaxy now is divided into three sectors. The Old Sector is the smallest, where the planets are very advanced, their technlogy indistinguishable from magic to more primitive minds. The Alliance is found in this sector- a group of very advanced planets who have made it their mission to re-unite humanity, and teach the others of their kind the secrets of their advanced technology, when they are ready. The Middle Sector is a region of space where relatively stable empires and societies formed, but with very limited technology. The people in this sector suffer under barbaric regimes, with dictators, mega-corporations and mad prophets holding power. The Wild Sector meanwhile is by far the largest. This is an area where no stable societies exist, where barbarians, explorers and traders travel around, risking their lives for the freedom and opportunities this sector offers. The Wild Sector is also home to horrific mutations, and humans who evolved into barbaric monsters during the Great Closing.
